The medical team in the Department of Orthopedics at the Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital successfully performed a double surgery to replace the hip and knee joints at the same time for the first time in Kuwait on an 82-year-old patient who was suffering from pain as a result of a fracture in the pelvic joint and severe roughness in the knee joint.
Dr. Salama Ayyad who is an orthopedic and joint replacement consultant at the hospital, told Al-Qabas daily, Tuesday, that in normal circumstances, the pelvic joint is replaced by a separate surgery, and the knee joint by another operation, but the patient’s condition and the pain and restriction in knee movement called for merging the two operations.
Dr. Ayyad explained that there are 20 cases on the list of surgeries, in addition to the hospital’s coverage of all supporting hospitals, such as Al-Adan Hospital and the Al-Jahra Hospital, where an integrated medical team during the past three months performed 63 cases between pelvic and knee joint replacements.
Dr Ayyad advised patients who need to replace the pelvic joint to take this step without hesitation, as it is considered the best surgical intervention and is proven by scientific research, and its results are positive in excess of 99 percent.
He reported that the Jaber Hospital fully launched work in the orthopedic department after the end of the Corona pandemic, appreciating the efforts of the medical, nursing and supportive staff for their effective role in the success of the surgeries.
