Fishermen’s Union: Suspension of entry visas for expats disrupted fishing sector

The head of the Kuwaiti Federation of Fishermen, Dhaher Al-Soyyan, called on the Minister of Interior, Sheikh Talal Al-Khaled, to open entry visas for expatriate workers, to fill the scarcity of labor in the local market. According to a report by Al Rai newspaper, Al-Suwaiyan said that the Kuwaiti labor market needs fishermen, as many workers have left the country for good, while stressing the need to approve the applications submitted by the owners of fishing licenses so that they can carry out their duty in providing local marine food security.

Moreover, he mentioned the fishermen’s aim to overcome the challenges facing the fishing sector, foremost of which is the employment crisis. Al-Suwaiyan noted that many members of the federation applied for new work permits for fishermen, but their efforts were not met. Instead, their files were suspended and their boats ceased operations due to the lack of labor in the current market.
