Director General and Board Chairman of Kuwait’s Environment Public Authority (EPA) Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad AlHumoud AlSabah on Tuesday called for making more efforts to curb climate change.

This came in Sheikh Abdullah’s speech to the 25th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 25). He stressed the necessity of taking suitable applicable decisions for protecting peoples and countries from this phenomenon.

He noted that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said in its report issued last June that Kuwait had the highest temperature in the last 76 years. He pointed out that Kuwait had 9.53 degree Celsius in July 2016, indicating that the country has started suffering from extreme weather conditions.

He revealed that the showers hit the country last November led to several casualties. Despite climate change, Kuwait is seeking, according to its available potentials, to carry out ambitious projects to curb carbon emissions, Sheikh Abudllah stressed. This is in line with the vision of His Highness the Amir aiming to use renewable and alternative energy by 15 percent out of total energy by 2030, he said.

Speaking to KUNA in a statement, Sheikh Abdullah also affirmed Kuwait’s commitment to all international conventions in all fields including climate change. The Kuwaiti delegation is participating in the conference to set guiding principles to carry out the provisions of Paris climate change agreement and reviewed Kuwait’s experiment in facing challenges of climate change, he said.

There is cooperation between the oil sector, and the Ministry of Electricity and Water to create new solar fields in Kuwait through which electricity is produced, he revealed. He pointed to the establishment of five wind plants to produce 10 megawatts of electricity at the present time.
