Electronic games blamed for 70% of juvenile crimes: KSIS

Participants in a symposium held by the Kuwaiti Society for Information Security (KSIS) have sounded an alarm bell saying 69.9% of crimes are committed by juveniles and blamed the electronic games saying these juveniles spend hours entertaining and enjoying these games through social media away from the watchful eyes of parents or elders.

They emphasized that the children of the age group from 15 to 18 years are exposed daily to this imminent danger, which exposes them to the negatives that affect their mental and physical health as a result of which they get entrapped in societal dangers and violent attacks.

During a symposium organized by the President of the Kuwait Society for Information Security, Dr. Safa’a Zaman, the specialists recounted experiences and stories that children and adolescents in the country were exposed to as a result of these games, including photographing themselves and their families in inappropriate situations, for the purpose of extortion in exchange for money that can be used in games.

A security source indicated that there are various issues related to games, including the recruitment of a group of teenagers who were caught months ago, for the benefit of one of the organizations with the aim of carrying out a terrorist act inside the country, and it is considered the second group of teenagers caught by the security services after being recruited through games (the previous similar case was back in 2020).

In turn, Zaman confirmed that there are multiple problems associated with games and widespread dangers, including “psychological, family, behavioral, violence, and education” problems, as these games have become one of the negative influences on the educational attainment of students.

She warned that lack of role models leads children to entering the world of social communication through imitation without knowing the danger threatening them. The spread of any image on the Internet entails a set of data that others pick up and use badly, amounting to extortion.

Figures and facts from the symposium

— Adolescents in the age group between 15 and 18 years are most likely to commit crimes against life and money
— Public roads and commercial complexes are the most common places for assaults and thefts
— 33% of the juveniles use knives in combat out of the total means of self-assault
— Electronic games are first cause of aggressive behavior among juveniles, with a 69.9% rate.
