DDI launches PORTAL, an Interface for Community Engagement in Research

The senior leadership team at Dasman Diabetes Institute (DDI), headed by Dr. Qais Al-Duwairi created the Public Office for Research Translation and Liaison ‘PORTAL’, which aims to educate and engage the public in the research performed and scientific breakthroughs achieved at DDI, which was founded by Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS). This is to inform the public of the importance of research and its implications on people’s health and wellbeing.

Education is necessary to inform the public in a simplified and transparent way about the important work happening at DDI by various research groups and research leaders. PORTAL aims at affirming and sculpturing the ‘Research Culture’ and build the needed trust and confidence between the public and the researchers.

In addition, it aims at enhancing the participation of the public in research. No breakthrough in research can be achieved without the willingness of people to participate in discoveries for the benefit of all humanity.

Through PORTAL, DDI researchers will showcase the first breakthrough in understanding diabetes. To that end,  researchers at DDI have discovered that diabetes causes a substantial loss in muscle mass and function due to the activation of an accelerated “Aging” program in muscle and other cells. This discovery has been published in a very reputable scientific journal for its clinical and scientific impact.
