The Kuwait Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Mohammad Al-Sabah paid tribute Thursday to late Javier Perez de Cuellar, the former UN Secretary General, for his “historic and active” role in supporting Kuwait’s legitimate cause during the 1990-91 Iraqi invasion and occupation of Kuwait.
Sheikh Ahmad, in a tribute to de Cuellar at the Peruvian Embassy in Kuwait, said de Cuellar played a leading role in supporting the UN’s endeavors towards boosting international peace and security.
He said his support of Kuwait’s just cause earned him great respect among diplomatic circles and the international community as a whole. A veteran diplomat, lawyer and professor, he is the first and only Latin American to hold the top UN job so far. He was named as the UN’s fifth secretary-general in 1981 and during his two terms as UN Chief he led the international body during some of the most critical years of the Cold War between America and the Soviet Union.
