A 4-minute daily activity that keeps cancer at bay

A scientific study has found that short periods of daily activity that make you groan, such as playing high-energy games with children, can reduce the risk of cancer.

According to the study, a total of just four and a half minutes of vigorous activity — done in bursts of about one minute each — during daily tasks can reduce the risk of cancer by 18 percent, and the risk of some cancers associated with physical activity by up to 32 percent.

Other activities can include vigorous housework, heavy shopping, or brisk walking.

Lead author Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, from the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney, Australia, said: “We know that the majority of middle-aged people do not exercise regularly, which puts them at risk of developing cancer. But it is only through the advent of wearable technology such as activity trackers that we can look at the impact of short bursts of casual physical activity as part of daily life.”

Cancers associated with physical inactivity include liver, lung, kidney, leukemia, colorectal, and others.
