900 cases of assault in 2020 due to psychological distress

The Coronavirus pandemic has had a negative impact on the mental health of residents of Kuwait, leading to an increased rates of violence and bloodshed, as there were 900 cases of assault in 2020 including incidents of violence in residential areas, compounds, markets and other places, Al-Qabas daily reported.

In recent times, assault crimes have increased significantly, including violence and aggressive behavior, and the Ministry of Interior and other concerned bodies are being urged to confront the violence and aggressive behavior that has spread recently. There needs to be coordination between the concerned authorities to reduce this dangerous phenomenon and present effective solutions to tackle the causes of these problems.

A security official told Al-Qabas daily that youth violence has become a problem for security services, with aggressive behavior common among many juveniles and youth.

He pointed out that the investigations conducted by the security services into crimes of violence and murder indicate that the majority of these crimes occur due to trivial disputes.

Al-Qabas opened the file of violence and aggressive behavior once again, and polled opinions about the growing phenomenon of “bloodshed” for trivial reasons.

Specialists revealed that the closure of entertainment places due to Coronavirus, the lack of parks, and the lack of an outlet for the new generation, compel them to turn to violence, attack each other, and fight for trivial reasons.

They indicated that failure for life to return to normalcy, partially closing the airport, and not traveling were among the factors that contributed to lack for development and entertainment opportunities for the youth. This has caused an increase in crimes due to aggressive behavior.

5 steps required

1 – Focusing on the educational, social and psychological aspects

2- Media and community messages that address the repercussions of the Coronavirus crisis

3 – Returning youth to schools, and opening the airport and recreational places
