The Ministry of Information has referred 20 electronic media sites to the Public Prosecution for violating laws.

A local Arabic daily said, the ministry had earlier put 86 unlicensed electronic media services under surveillance and many have been served legal notices.

The same sources said the Electronic Publishing Department counted about 140 services and electronic media outlets were issued licenses, but not all them practice the activity or stopped for a period of 6 months and the Ministry will withdraw their licenses in implementation of the law regulating electronic media.

The sources added Article 16 of the law gives the ministry the right to cancel the license if the licensee does not practice the activity within 6 months, as well as if the license period expires without a request to renew it within 6 months from the date of its expiry.

As for how to control unlicensed news accounts, the source explained that the ministry, through the concerned agencies, knows the location of the news broadcast, whether inside or outside Kuwait, explaining that accounts which operate from inside the country are referred to the prosecution to take the necessary measures against them.

Regarding the cancellation of licenses for inactive accounts, the source indicated that an e-mail was sent to the account holders that did not practice their activity within 6 months of issuing the license, but the Ministry has not received any responses and therefore these licenses will be canceled.

The source concluded by saying the ministry will refer all electronic media services in violation of the law regulating electronic media to the Public Prosecution, pointing out that the law will apply to all services, whether licensed or unlicensed.
