Ten members of the Kuwaiti National Assembly (parliament) on Tuesday filed a no-confidence vote against Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser AlMohammad Al-Sabah at the end of a parliamentary session during which he was queried about alleged irregularities in his department.
National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanem indicated that the request to strip the minister of the confidence would be examined in seven days according to the parliament bylaw, which also stipulates that a minister who may face such an eventuality must resign instantly. A no confidence vote to pass requires approval of the majority of the MPs.
Earlier in today’s session, Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser meticulously reacted to charges raised by a member of the National Assembly (parliament) denying irregularities in his department and assuring MPs about the ministry care about Kuwaiti citizens’ welfare and interests abroad.
Sheikh Ahmad Nasser, who doubles as Deputy Prime Minister for Cabinet Affairs, answered in detail queries by MP Shuaib Al-Muwaizeri, who had filed a motion to grill the minister over issues in his department. Sheikh Ahmad said the foreign ministry had pinpointed a shortcoming on part of a contractor responsible for building a complex for the Kuwaiti diplomatic mission in Brunei and liquidated his banking guarantee.
Moreover, Sheikh Ahmad pointed out that the complex construction issue dated back to 2016 and that he had taken the office in 2019. As to irregularities at the ministry, he said that MP Al-Muwaizeri failed to specify any illegal act and asked him why he abstained from complaining instantly after learning about such alleged offenses.
Regarding the mysterious disappearance of the Kuwaiti national Mohammad Al-Baghli in Romania, the minister disclosed that a security delegation would travel to the European country in March to follow up on the case, while affirming the ministry keenness on following up closely on affairs of the citizens abroad and securing their needs.
Replying to the charges about breaching international treaties and conventions, totaling 2,616 since 1961, Sheikh Ahmad urged the concerned legislator to specify which accords had been violated particularly with respect of schedules and legal perspectives.
