Kuwait commits to empowering women through new legislation
Dr. Khaled Al-Ajmi, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs, noted that the country holds a leading position in championing women’s rights and empowerment at all levels.
• Dr. Khaled Al-Ajmi said Kuwait has achieved record women’s empowerment in banking and government sectors, while developing key laws to support, protect, and enhance the security and stability of women and society.
Dr. Khaled Al-Ajmi, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs, emphasized Kuwait’s commitment to developing a comprehensive legislative system to support, protect, and empower women across various fields. He noted that Kuwait holds a leading position in championing women’s rights and empowerment at all levels, according to Al Jarida newspaper.
Al-Ajmi told KUNA, while heading the Kuwaiti delegation participating in the 12th session of the Women’s Committee of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in the Omani capital, Muscat, that “Kuwait has achieved record rates of empowering women in the banking and supervisory sectors of government entities. The country has also been keen to develop an integrated legislative system to support and protect women, notably through the Protection from Domestic Violence Law No. 16 of 2020 and the Public Assistance Law No. 12 of 2011. These laws represent a pivotal step in enhancing the security and family stability of Kuwaiti society in general, and Kuwaiti women in particular, as they provide an extended social safety net for Kuwaiti women.”
Al-Ajmi pointed out that Kuwait has made significant progress in empowering women in the labor market. The percentage of Kuwaiti women in the banking sector has reached more than 35%, while the proportion of female citizens in supervisory positions at the Ministry of Social Affairs has exceeded 58%. Additionally, women make up 90% of the members of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs
He emphasized that these figures reflect the political will and government support to empower women and enhance their participation in various vital sectors.
