Kuwait braces for dust storms, scorching heat

Met department urges the public to exercise caution, remain indoors during peak heat hours, follow updates from official weather sources

Kuwait is currently experiencing the impact of active northwesterly winds that are expected to exceed 60 kilometers per hour, leading to widespread dust storms and reduced horizontal visibility, according to Dharar Al-Ali, Acting Director of the Meteorology Department.

In a statement to KUNA, Al-Ali warned that visibility may drop to less than 1,000 meters in some areas, particularly in open and desert regions. These challenging weather conditions are forecast to persist in the coming days.

Alongside dusty conditions, Al-Ali said Kuwait will witness a gradual rise in temperatures, reaching 47 to 49 degrees Celsius, especially by Tuesday and Wednesday, resulting in very hot and dry weather across the country.

Maritime conditions are also expected to deteriorate, with sea waves exceeding six feet in height. This poses potential risks for seafarers and coastal activities.

The harsh weather is attributed to the beginning of the country’s exposure to an extension of the Indian monsoon depression, which brings with it a hot and dry air mass. This seasonal climatic phenomenon is known to influence the Gulf region during the summer months, often leading to dust storms and temperature surges.

The Meteorology Department urges the public to exercise caution, avoid outdoor exposure during peak heat hours, and follow updates from official weather channels.
