India set to receive first Iranian crude oil cargo in seven years

. . . as US sanctions ease temporarily

India is set to receive its first shipment of Iranian crude oil in seven years, following a temporary easing of US sanctions on Iranian oil and refined products, according to a Reuters report.

A vessel carrying Iranian crude is currently en route to India’s eastern coast, based on ship-tracking data from LSEG and Kpler cited by the report.

The cargo, transported aboard the Curacao-flagged crude carrier Jaya, was reportedly purchased by state-run Indian Oil Corporation.

The vessel had earlier seen in Southeast Asian waters, where it was initially expected to discharge cargo in China before being rerouted toward India.

Tracking data also indicated another vessel, the Jordan, showing India as its destination for discharge, further suggesting renewed crude flows between Tehran and New Delhi.

There was no immediate official comment from Indian Oil regarding the reported shipment, dw.com reports.

India has not imported Iranian oil since 2019, following the re-imposition of US sanctions targeting entities trading with Iran.

However, last week India’s oil ministry confirmed that refiners had resumed limited purchases amid supply disruptions linked to wider instability in Middle Eastern energy markets.

India, the world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer, continues to balance its energy needs with shifting geopolitical and sanctions-related constraints affecting global crude supply chains.
