International Air Transport Association Director General Willie Walsh warned Europe may begin cancelling flights as early as late May due to a looming jet fuel shortage, raising concerns over disruptions during the peak summer travel season.
Walsh stressed that alongside efforts to secure alternative fuel supplies, authorities must establish clear and coordinated contingency plans in case fuel rationing becomes necessary.
European airlines have already cautioned that shortages could emerge within weeks, driven by the ongoing Iranian war, which has effectively shut down key supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
The situation leaves Europe particularly exposed, as it depends heavily on imports for its jet fuel needs, with roughly 75% sourced from the Middle East.
According to a report by the International Energy Agency, global demand for jet fuel and kerosene averaged 7.8 million barrels per day in 2025, with Gulf countries playing a central role in supply to international markets.
