Flight operations at Berlin Airport were suspended for nearly two hours on Friday evening after unidentified drones were detected flying over the facility, an airport spokesman told AFP — marking the latest in a growing series of similar incidents across Europe.
According to the spokesman, air traffic was halted between 8:08 p.m. and 9:58 p.m. local time (19:08–20:58 GMT) as a safety precaution. During the closure, “a whole series of flights” were diverted to other German cities until normal operations resumed.
The temporary shutdown comes amid increasing concerns over unauthorized drone activity near airports, which poses risks to aviation safety and has prompted renewed calls for stricter monitoring and enforcement measures across the European Union.
