Friday afternoon, members of the Sara Philippines International Kuwait Chapter (SPIK) came together to celebrate the birthday of the Philippine Vice President, Sara Duterte. This delightful gathering welcomed Filipino household service workers, allowing them to enjoy a well-deserved day off filled with camaraderie and entertainment.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement as the event commenced with an opening prayer led by Clairole Labod, setting a reflective tone for the celebration. Following the prayer, attendees stood for the Philippine National Anthem, unifying everyone in a moment of shared nationalism and pride. SPIK Director Abdel Nasser Jamsuri then delivered heartfelt welcome remarks, emphasizing the importance of the event as a time to connect with each other and celebrate their heritage, all encapsulated under the theme of “Bayanihan Spirit”—a Filipino value that exemplifies community solidarity.

Key participants were introduced by National Assistant Secretary General Manong Wix, who highlighted the event’s purpose. The atmosphere was uplifting, filled with laughter and the buzz of reunions, as many household workers in Kuwait often have limited opportunities to socialize and unwind due to their demanding jobs.

One of the most captivating segments of the day featured Zumba performances from three different groups, showcasing the talent and coordinated energy among the participants. An on-the-spot singing contest provided another layer of entertainment, with participants showcasing their vocal prowess to the delight of the crowd. The celebration also featured a ceremonial cake cutting, with attendees extending heartfelt greetings and recorded messages to Vice President Duterte, illustrating their collective appreciation for her leadership.

The entertainment did not stop there. Renowned vocalist Liphee entertained guests with popular songs, setting a joyful ambiance throughout the event. National Vice President for Overseas Filipinos, Glenn Manliguez, took a moment to address the crowd, reinforcing the significance of unity and the pivotal role played by overseas Filipino workers in fostering a positive image of the Philippines abroad.

A highlight of the evening was an impromptu beauty pageant that included five contestants, all of whom are dedicated household workers. The excitement was palpable as the judges—Nihar Esmula, Leilani Aguillon, and Ricky Laxa—prepared to announce the winners. After a charming serenade by Liphee, the winners were revealed: Norni Bebeloni was crowned the grand prize winner, with Jane Avancio and Maritess delos Santos taking home second and third prizes, respectively. Gerilin Agunus and Marivic Pavicon received fourth and fifth place honors, creating moments of joy and celebration among all participants.

As the day drew to a close, Ways and Means Officer Mae Ortiz expressed gratitude to everyone involved in organizing the event, ensuring that all workers felt valued and appreciated. A delicious lunch was served, ending the festivities on a warm note of fellowship.

This celebration not only marked the birthday of a prominent leader but also reaffirmed the strength and unity of the Filipino community in Kuwait. SPIK’s successful event underscored the importance of maintaining cultural ties and supporting each other, reinforcing the bayanihan spirit that binds Filipinos together, even thousands of miles away from home.
