The historic and heritage-rich market, particularly the heavily affected ‘Security Market’ has been rebuilt with an allocation of 6 million dinars for reconstruction.
Ever since the fire broke out; the government, heritage enthusiasts, and public benefit societies have worked together to restore Al-Mubarakiya Market, recognizing its historical significance and cultural importance to all Kuwaitis.
The Al-Mubarakiya Market is seen as a vital link to the nation’s past. Authorities quickly prepared a detailed report on how to address the fire’s impact, emphasizing the need to preserve the market’s historical identity and its unique architectural style.
What’s more important is that the Al-Mubarakiya Market reconstruction project, with a budget of 6 million dinars, is nearing completion and is expected to be ready within the next six months. The damaged shops, particularly in the Weapons Market, will soon resume their activities, restoring the market’s vibrant commercial life.
Most of the markets have returned to their former state, with activity picking up once again. These markets are not only important to Kuwaitis but also represent a living history, a renewed heritage, and landmarks deeply embedded in the nation’s collective memory, according to Al-Anba.
Moreover, it was noticed that a surge of activity at Mubarak’s kiosk, with customers flocking to popular spots like Abu Nashi Coffee and Al-Dalalwa Coffee. There was also a notable presence in various markets, including those for gold, sweets, baskets, bisht, attarin, sarrif, ghutra, aql, rosary, fish, meat, vegetables, women’s items, dates, and jat, shared Al-Anba.
Furthermore, Al-Anba also spoke with several vendors who expressed optimism about the reconstruction of the part of Al-Mubarakiya that was affected by the fire.
Saud Aboud shared his experience, recalling the tragic day two years ago when the fire broke out in Al-Gharballi Market, witnessing flames engulfing shops in the Arms Market. He expressed his gratitude for the swift response from the government, with fire engines and ambulances rushing to the scene. Thank God, with minimal losses.
Furthermore, Saud Aboud explained that the reconstruction project is closely monitored by officials, with regular visits from the Minister of Municipality to check on its progress. Additionally, H. E. Sheikha Amthal Al-Ahmad and the Governor of the Capital, have shown a strong commitment to overseeing the restoration of Al-Mubarakiya, ensuring that the project moves forward smoothly.
For his part, Abu Imad expressed optimism, saying that things are going well and the effects of the fire are now behind them. He eagerly awaits the completion of the reconstruction project and the reopening of the shops that were closed due to the fire. Having worked in the market for many years, he shared that he has cherished memories in every corner of Al-Mubarakiya.
On the other hand, Mohammed Hussein shared his feelings of regret as he watches the ongoing reconstruction project. He recalled having a home utensils shop in the Arms Market, which was destroyed by the fire. Forced to open a temporary shop nearby, he expressed his eagerness for the renovation’s completion so he can return to his original shop once it is restored.
Government interest
Importantly, the government agencies involved in the restoration of Al-Mubarakiya have made significant efforts to restore the heritage markets to their former glory.
The interest in the project was at the highest levels, with the Minister of Public Works, Dr. Noura Al-Mishaan, who was also the Minister of State for Municipal Affairs at the time, regularly visiting the reconstruction site after the major fire that affected parts of the market on March 31, 2022.
The restoration of Al-Mubarakiya received significant attention from H. E. Sheikha Amthal Al-Ahmad, Head of the Volunteer Work Center, who was dedicated to regularly following up on the reconstruction progress. The Capital Governorate also showed strong support, demonstrating a shared commitment to the revitalization of the historic market.
