The UN cultural agency, UNESCO, hosted an award ceremony on Monday for its joint Kuwaitfunded prize for Digital Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, named after the late Amir Jaber AlAhmad AlJaber AlSabah.

Disabled rights activist Vashkar Bhattacharjee of Bangladesh was awarded the individuals category with the organisations' prize going to Chinese web programmers, Tencent.

Amid remarks at the event, Sheikh Mubarak Jaber AlAhmad AlSabah said Kuwait, led by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad AlJaber AlSabah, is committed to UNESCO's efforts in support of disabled persons.

Kuwait's UNESCO representative Adam AlMulla said the prize's importance stems from its noble goals to encourage the integration of the disabled community into the rest of society.

Speaking about the prize, he said it aims to break down barriers faced by disabled learners in obtaining knowledge via the digital world.

For his part, the Minister of Education and Minister Higher Education's representative Undersecretary Bader AlMutairi said the ministry is committed to embracing the disabled community in Kuwait, granting them the right to education alongside their ablebodied counterparts. This includes providing fullyequipped schools catering to all forms of disability.
