Two Saudi women arrested for marrying multiple men
June 5, 2014, 11:04 am

Two Saudi women have reportedly been arrested for polyandry, or marrying more than one man. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia) – commonly known as the religious police – arrested a group of Saudis who had helped arrange the illegal marriages.

Under Saudi law, couples can agree to a marriage where they give up certain rights such as living together and financial obligations.
However, polyandry – the female version of polygamy - is forbidden in Islam. Arab News said the arrested suspects had tried to marry the women to other men and had arranged for another Arab to authorise the unions. The Haia arrested them as they were conducting one of the marriages.
