Turkey’s contributions to Iraq’s stability and peace
February 10, 2018, 2:50 pm

Iraq’s stability, its political unity and territorial integrity are of critical importance for Turkey. Turkey has been severely affected of the instability and security problems in Iraq for decades. Thus, Turkey supports any initiative that contributes to Iraq’s security and stability. To this end, Turkey has spared no efforts to contribute Iraq’s stabilisation and reconstruction efforts.

Turkey provided shelter to hundreds of thousands Iraqis who sought refuge from persecution during Saddam Hussein’s Anfal campaign. Since then we have been providing relief aid and humanitarian assistance whenever there is need.

Turkey provides development aid to Iraq. In 2003, at Madrid Donors Conference, we pledged 50 million US Dollars for Iraq. Indeed, we have overly fulfilled our pledge. Back then, we made contributions to the International Reconstruction Fund Facility for Iraq (IRFFI). Turkey have been treating wounded Iraqi terror victims and patients.

During the Da’esh crisis, Turkey hosted hundreds of thousands Iraqis who fled their homes. There still are more than 300,000 Iraqis in Turkey. Several thousands are sheltered and accommodated in camps inside Turkey. Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) set up 3 IDP camps in Iraq and provided shelter and basic services for more than 37,000 Iraqis. Turkish Red Crescent dispatched relief aid to alleviate the humanitarian crises in most affected regions of Iraq during the Da’esh crisis. Turkish civil society organisations have also been very active in conveying humanitarian assistance to Iraq.

Now, Turkey is ready to contribute to the reconstruction of Iraq.  In addition to our stabilisation efforts in conflict-stricken regions such as Nineveh, Kirkuk and Salahaddin, we aim at strategic projects to rebuild critical infrastructure. Turkish private sector is a very strong enabler for Iraq’s rebuilding. Turkish contractors have so far accomplished 25 billion US Dollars-worth projects in Iraq; 1 billion in 2017 alone. Turkish companies have excellent expertise and necessary skills to operate in every province of Iraq.

Their resilience and cost-effectiveness make them reliable partners for both the Iraqi Government and international entities for reconstruction and investment projects.
