Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs Major- General Abdullah Al- Muhanna, announced traffic accidents has claimed the lives of 168 citizens and residents since the beginning of this year and until the end of last May, most of them young people, reports Al-Qabas daily.
In a statement yesterday Al-Muhanna stated he 106 foreigners of various nationalities who were caught driving without licence have been deported since the activation of a decision to deport any expatriate driving a vehicle without a license. He stressed everyone is equal before the traffic law.
He revealed statistics for the first five months ending last May of this year show 40,180 traffic accidents have been recorded. He disclosed the General Traffic Department, for the same period, has issued 819,000 traffic citations including 19,000 for parking vehicles in places reserved for the physically handicapped people, 17,000 for speaking on the phone while driving, impounded 47,000 vehicles and 438 motorcycles for committing various types of offences.
He explained he was dealing with more than 4,000 reports about people who disregard traffic laws and drive recklessly putting at risk the lives of pedestrians and other motorists. Of these, he said, 1,173 motorists have already been referred to the General Traffic Department jail. He said 156,000 motorists who had committed serious traffic offences have been referred to the judiciary.
