Single municipal system key to development, parliament rejects bid to strip MP of immunity
January 9, 2018, 5:37 pm

A number of Kuwaiti lawmakers have concurred that all six of the country's governorates should be assigned their own individual municipalities with the jurisdiction needed to carry out their duties. The Kuwaiti MPs expressed their beliefs in a regular parliamentary session on Tuesday dealing with amendments to certain municipal by-laws.

Meanwhile, some MPs were dismayed over the government's failure to set a date for municipal elections, leaving the governing body's affairs on the back burner. The lawmakers also stressed the need to hold a fair voting process when municipal elections are held, where no citizen is deprived of voting rights.

On the municipal council, the consensus among MPs is that the body should keep its clout.

In similar news, the National Assembly at its regular session on Tuesday turned down a request by the Public Prosecution to strip MP Safaa Al-Hashem of her parliamentary immunity, regarding case (No. 2017/3303) "municipal misdemeanor." The MPs discussed during the session a report by the legislative and legal affairs committee concerning the case.
