A Saudi man has reportedly divorced his wife for driving in defiance of the kingdom’s unofficial ban on female drivers.
The story has caused a stir on social media, where the issue of allowing women the right to drive is often discussed in heated debates.
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that does not allow women to drive.
It is not stipulated in Saudi law or banned under Islam but is heavily enforced by the religious police, who hold great influence in the conservative kingdom.
Arabic news outlet Al-Arabiya.net said bloggers and social media users were divided over the man’s decision to divorce his wife, who reportedly took his car without permission and posted a video of herself driving on Youtube.
“There is no ban against women driving in Islam; then why are they not allowed to drive in the Kingdom,” a blogger was quoted as saying.
Another, named Tarek, said he understood the man’s decision.
“His wife not only drove the car but also took video of her driving and published it through YouTube without her husband’s knowledge or permission,” he wrote.
