Saudi male councillors refuse to sit next to newly-elected female colleagues
January 11, 2016, 8:33 am

Some male councillors in Saudi Arabia have reportedly refused to sit next to their newly-elected female counterparts. A partition had to be spontaneously erected at Jeddah’s municipal council last week when its new female members, Lama Al Suleiman and Rasha Hafathi, attempted to participate, Arab News reported.

However, the divide was removed after Al Suleiman objected to it. Further controversy arose when the women were to be included in a photograph of all of the new councillors. Women were elected to municipal councils in the conservative kingdom for the first time on December 12.
