Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Major-General Abdullah Al-Muhanna was recently quoted as saying a committee has been formed to pursue motorists who carry forged driving licences, reports Al-Qabas daily. He disclosed there are motorists out there who do not hold ‘valid’ driving licences.
These licences, he said, are forged and have not been legally issued by the General Traffic Department. He went on to say these licences have been issued by corrupt employees working at the department in violation of the law.
Meanwhile, Al-Muhanna has denied reports which said thousands of such licences have been issued. He pointed out only a limited number of them were issued and that the GTD was able to identify and withdraw and/or cancel them. During an interview with the daily he stressed on the seriousness of the issue and said the Ministry of Interior will continue to deport any expatriate found driving the vehicle without a licence. He pointed out the number of persons deported has reached 80 over 40 days since the beginning of the campaign.
