MP Essa Al-Kandari has been elected as Deputy National Assembly Speaker, edging out MP Jamaan Al-Harbash in the second round of voting with 32 to 31 votes, respectively. In the first round of voting, Al-Harbash was ahead of Al-Kandari by one vote, which necessitated a second round since neither MP garnered an outright majority of the votes.
Moreover, the election of the Deputy Speaker was conducted in line with Article 92 of the Kuwait Constitution and Article 28 of the National Assembly bylaw, which both state that the National Assembly elects at its first session and for the duration of its term, a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker from amongst the members.
Born in 1963, Al-Kandari earned a diploma in banking and had previously worked for Kuwait Airways. He is also a member of the Kuwait Journalists Association and the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). Al-Kandari also previously served as Minister of Communications and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs.
