Labourers in the UAE paid less than AED2,000 ($544) per month must be provided with free accommodation by their employers, according to a new decree issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

The decree only applies to companies hiring more than 50 workers, news agency WAM reported, citing a statement by Saqr Ghobash, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

It added that the decree will come into force in December. The Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation said companies that employ less than 50 workers who earn more than AED2,000 monthly are also urged to provide free accommodation but it remains optional. "The decree shall sanction all necessary measures to take against facilities that choose to disobey and violate suggested terms and regulations," WAM added.

Ghobash said: "Experts spent several months studying the living conditions of those workers, who have been listed in the ministry’s classifications system as low-skill labourers. The ministry follows up on the workers' housing via inspectional visits and takes legal action against violating facilities."
