The World Retail Conference in Rome has inducted Kuwaiti businessman Mohammad Alshaya into its 2015 hall of fame describing the CEO and Executive Chairman of Alshaya Group as "highly respected" around the world. In its closing statement received by KUNA on Saturday, the World Retail Congress said that it was "delighted to announce that the third inductee into this year's World Retail Hall of Fame is Mohammad Alshaya, Executive Chairman, the Alshaya group of companies.
"Highly respected by retailers around the world, Mohammad has created a strong partnership approach to help drive growth not only through the Middle East but also North Africa, Turkey, Russia and Europe," added the event, which ran from September 8 to 10. The Kuwaiti was selected alongside another four businessmen from different countries around the world - the list having already inducted over 100 business icons who have contributed greatly to the retail world.
These names included, "Dr. Christo Weise, Chairperson of Pepkor Holdings (Pty) Limited and Shoprite Holdings Limited and Kip Tindell, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of The Container Store in the 2015 World Retail Hall of Fame," the statement mentioned. Commenting on the award, Alshaya said, "inclusion in the World Retail Hall of Fame is a great honour for me and for our family business. Retail is the most exciting industry in the world, constantly evolving and delivering new opportunities for growth.
"I have been privileged to be part of that evolution, partnering with some of the world's greatest retail brands to help develop a modern retailing culture in the Middle East which has delivered exciting new choices to customers and created many thousands of job opportunities." Alshaya is a long-established Kuwaiti family business formed in 1890, but since Mohammad Alshaya became CEO in 1990, it has been transformed into a powerful retailer of some of the world's biggest brands.
The Alshaya Group now partners with over 70 international brands in industries as diverse as real estate, construction, hotel hospitality, automobile, investment, catering and fashion retail. The group employs more than 44,000 staff, representing over 110 nationalities. Mohammad Alshaya became Executive Chairman in 2007. He is also chairman of Mabanee Company SAK, the mall development company behind Kuwaiti mall, The Avenues.
