April 12, 2015, 10:40 am

Kuwait tops the world in terms of number of obese people, a health official said Saturday, and noted percentage of people being obese could reach 73. Assistant Undersecretary for Technical Affairs Dr. Qais Al-Duwairi warned against threats posed by heart and brain diseases, and artery blockage which have become very common "and have negative impacts on the society." Al-Duwairi made the remarks on behalf of Health Minister Dr. Ali Al-Obaidi at the launch of an awareness campaign in Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital about whether "Your Heart and Mind are safe or in danger?" He underlined importance of early detection of these diseases in order to prevent their deterioration.

He said bad eating habits like eating salty food could eventually increase blood pressure and cholesterol, which contribute to rising heart and artery diseases. Al-Duwairi hoped the awareness campaign would help citizens and expatriates to take precautionary measures against these diseases. Dr. Majda Al-Saleh, head of the Medical Department at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital, said the awareness day was launched to educate people about the lethal impacts of obesity-related diseases.
