Kuwait has moved to publicly assure the country’s borders are secure from any potential attack by the Islamic State (formerly the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria), which has gained significant territory in neighbouring Iraq.

Security and military sources told Arabic daily Al Anba Kuwait was secure from terrorist acts but “we are ready for any possible actions that may take place in areas surrounding us”.

The sources played down rumours that the Islamic State was present in Kuwait, which was invaded by Iraq in 1990-91 in a war that caused significant economic damage the country has struggled to recover from.

Meanwhile, Kuwait has detained five Syrians who raised the Syrian revolution flag during a wedding ceremony, according to Kuwait Times.

Former MP Mohammad Hayef called for the release of the men, claiming sectarian leaders within Kuwait’s Interior Ministry were attempting to have them deported.

“[The] Interior Minister should release the Syrians because they have been served an injustice, or send them to the public prosecution to expose the lies of sectarian leaders who manipulate the truth,” Hayef was quoted as saying.
