Indian Foreign Minister arrives in Kuwait

India’s Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj arrived in Kuwait airport today, and was met by a Kuwait delegation. The minister is on an official visit as part of India’s objective to enhance engagement and relations with the countries in the Gulf region and it is expected to end on 31 October.

She was greeted by Kuwait Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Asia Affairs Salem Al Hamdan, alongside Kuwait Ambassador to India H.E. Jassem Al-Najem and Indian Ambassador to Kuwait H.E. K Jeeva Sagar.

During her two-day visit, the Indian minister will meet with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and hold bilateral meetings with her Kuwaiti counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Hamad Al Sabah. She will also interact with the Indian community in Kuwait. India and Kuwait share historically close and friendly relations bound by shared values.

Kuwait has been a major energy supplier to India and also hosts about one million Indians, who form the largest expatriate community in the country. India’s bilateral trade with Kuwait in 2017-18 was approximately US$8.5 billion. This will be the first visit to Kuwait by Ms. Swaraj in her role as External Affairs Minister. The visit will provide an opportunity to hold in-depth discussions with the Kuwait’s political leadership on a wide range of global, regional and bilateral issues, as well as advance India’s growing engagement with countries in the region, and in particular with the GCC countries.
