India has approved a prisoner transfer treaty with Qatar, where thousands of Indians work as labourers on the Gulf state’s construction sites.
The agreement would allow prisoners to be closer to their families during their sentences, a statement by the Indian government said.
Indians make up the largest expatriate group in Qatar, as well as other GCC states.
The Asian country already has similar prison transfer agreements with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
There were an estimated 500,000 Indians in Qatar at the end of 2012, according to the Indian Foreign Ministry, accounting for about one-quarter of the entire population.
