The Health Ministry marked the World Heart Day to raise awareness of heart disease and strokes, the world's leading cause of death. Head of Media Department at the Ministry Dr. Ghalia Al-Mutairi told the press, on Tuesday, the awareness campaign aims at educating the public on the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle to avoid heart diseases.
This year's theme focuses on making "Heart Choices Not Hard Choices" by creating healthy heart environments and ensuring that everyone has the chance to make healthy heart choices wherever they live, work and play, Al-Mutairi pointed out.
Heart diseases are one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with 17.1 million deaths annually, according to World Health Organization (WHO).
Some of the causes of heart diseases are: smoking, unhealthy life style, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes, Al-Mutairi clarified.
Simple changes in life style and in diet should lead to a healthy heart, she advised. Grabbing a fruit instead of a candy bar, or making home-cooked meals instead of dinning out or ordering in could go a long way in improving one's overall health, she added. She also advised to engage in some sort of a physical activity on a regular basis to promote one's health.
