The government is studying the possibility of banning the WhatsApp calling feature as a preventive security measure which has already been implemented in some Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates as well as in some Arab countries, reports Al-Rai daily quoting a reliable source.
He revealed that Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Communications have been coordinating to take necessary technical and security measures without affecting the users, adding that an ad hoc committee will form a detailed report in this regard and submit to the Cabinet to take a decision.
Meanwhile, another source indicated the difficulties in blocking free calling applications via Internet such as ‘Viber’ and ‘Tango’, because of the large number of applications that offer such services free of charge. He affirmed that the concerned authorities are considering all aspects in this regard to take appropriate action.
