GCC states affirm need to confront current challenges

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz inaugurated here on Wednesday the 36th GCC summit.

Kuwait's delegation is headed by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The summit saw participation of the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, King of Bahrain Hamad bin Esa Al Khalifa, Deputy President of the United Arab Emirates, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashed and Deputy Prime Minister for Cabinet Affairs of Oman Fahd bin Mahmoud Al Said.

King Salman said that the GCC region is witnessing very complicated challenges that necessitate efforts be united to confront them.

In his speech before the 36th GCC summit, King Salman asserted the importance of extending a hand to the Palestinians until their rights are restored and establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

 As for Yemen, the King said that the coalition countries were keen on achieving peace and security in Yemen under its legitimate leadership, saying that the GCC states support the political solution to enable Yemen overcome its crisis and restore its march of construction and development.

 On Syria, he said that the Kingdom is hosting an expanded meeting for the Syrian opposition as a sort of support to find a political solution that ensures unity of the Yemeni territory according to Geneva 1 statement. On terrorism, the King said that the world countries ought to confront extremism and terrorism, saying that the Kingdom has done a lot in this respect.

He said that 35 years after the establishment of the GCC, it is now time to assess the achievements and look for the future and what has been accomplished, adding that the GCC citizens were keen for more gains to make their lives even better.

Qatari Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairman of the 35th GCC summit said here on Wednesday that the current GCC summit is held amid critical circumstances and serious challenges facing the world in general and the Middle East in particular, "which cast more responsibility on us".

 "I am confident that our Council is able with God's help to deal with these challenges thanks to our solidarity and joint cooperation in all political, economic, security and other areas in order to protect our communities, maintain our gains, achieve the aspirations of our peoples and the consolidation of security, stability and prosperity in our country.”

He added that what has been so far achieved by the GCC despites their significance, however, the GCC people's ambitions are far more than what has been achieved, thus, "we ought to double our efforts for achieving those ambitions as we do not lack the resources nor the capabilities".

The Amir said that terrorism has become one of the most threatening challenges facing the modem world and threatening international peace and security, pointing to the criminal attacks that had targeted many countries without discrimination.

He pointed out that the world now ought to redouble its efforts to confront terrorism and eradicate its causes by all means and capabilities with taking into account the legitimate right of people to defend themselves against the foreign invaders and against terrorism that is threatening innocent civilians.

On Palestine, the Amir called on the world community to shoulder its responsibilities to safeguard the Palestinian people and stop Israel from continuing its activities in the occupied Palestinians territories.

Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani said that the decision of the GCC concerning the joint strategic projects and unified legislation as well as deepening integration in all spheres among the GCC states and other international blocs are being implemented and keenly followed up by the ministerial council and concerned committees.

Speaking before the 36th GCC summit being held here today, Al-Zayani added that the summit is held amidst critical regional conditions and challenges that necessitate vigilance and sincere work in order to preserve the accomplishments of this lofty bloc.

 He said that the GCC states are keen for more intehration and solidarity to achieve ambitions and desires of the GCC peoples who see through this bloc their bright future.

He thanked the state of Qatar for the distinguished chairmanship of the previous round.
