“Regular screening is extremely essential for the early detection and timely treatment of breast cancer,” said Dr. Agatha Moniz, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Medcare Hospital.

She was speaking at a special seminar organised by Khaleej Times for its women employees. The seminar was held at the Khaleej Times corporate headquarters in Al Quoz, Dubai on Sunday.

Highlighting the benefits of regular screening, Dr. Agatha said: “Breast cancer is among the only cancer that can be detected on time and can be prevented from spiraling out of control. Aggressive awareness on the subject today has prevented many women from reaching the fatal stages of the illness.”

“Being aware of your risk factors, which includes family history of breast cancer, and poor lifestyle to name of few, is very important. Doing regular check-ups are important to stay healthy and prevent the life-threatening disease.”

Risk factors include family history, intake of hormone replacement pills, lack of physical activity and poor lifestyle which includes smoking and alcohol intake. “Having children and breast feeding are factors that help reduce the risk of breast cancer,” the doctor said.
