Members and guests of The Fitness Professionals and Body Builders Committee in Kuwait (FITPRO) convened Friday morning at the Failaka Hall of the Radisson Blu Hotel to attend an hour of lecture delivered by members of Filipino Ambulance Nurses in Kuwait (PANIK) paired with a power-packed Zumba workout.

The event kicked-off with a welcome message by the President of FITPRO Noel Galicia followed by the lecture. Ambulance nurse Kristofferson Queja, in his presentation expounded common injuries in the gym, these are Carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, shoulder pain, shin splints, neck pain, plantar fasciitis, twisted ankle and swollen knees. Queja discussed in full details symptoms, prevention and cure of these injuries. He also noted two that personal attention of instructors is essential and vital to every workout. Enrique Luis Nuguid, another ambulance nurse, discussed three of the most common and usual medical occurrences in the gym, these are Acute Coronary Syndrome, Stroke and Hypoglycemia.

Nuguid explained that symptoms of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) include; Angina (chest tightness or discomfort), pain or pressure at the center of the chest and its surrounding area that lasts several minutes, pain spreads to the shoulders, neck, arms, or jaw, or pain in the back or between the shoulder blades, chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, or nausea and shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. Stroke or acute neurologic impairment is caused by interruption in blood supply to a specific area of the brain and symptoms include; sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body, sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination and sudden severe headache with no known cause. Management of Stroke includes Stroke Chain of Survival these are; rapid recognition and reaction to stroke warning signs, rapid activation of EMS system, rapid EMS-system transport and pre-arrival notification to the receiving hospital and rapid diagnosis and treatment in the hospital. The third medical issue discussed was Hypolgycemia a medical emergency that involves an abnormally diminished content of glucose in the blood. Signs and symptoms are shakiness, palpitations, nervousness, sweating, tachycardia, palor, coldness, and confusion, difficulty speaking stupor, coma and abnormal breathing. Management of the medical situation involves immediately raising the blood sugar to normal through the ingestion of carbohydrates taken as food or drink if the person is conscious and able to swallow. If person is unconscious, don’t attempt to give anything by mouth as it may cause aspiration. Instead, lay the person with head turned at the side to avoid aspiration of secretions and most importantly call EMS. President of PANIK Hengie Taton finally gave tips on how to prevent the injuries from occurring.

After a brief break, two of the most popular Zumba instructors split the hour workout. The first half of the hour workout was choreographed by Myna Anna Bernardo Dy of Champions Health Club backed up by instructors Ga See Marie and Ruth Montuya. The second half of the workout was headed by Blanche Bravo and backed up by Gerogia Al-Zahar and Stella Munch. Awarding of certificates followed with Galicia, Adviser Allan Bayoco and Vice President Boy Agpoon handing out the certificates to participants. Plaques of recognition were also awarded to Ms Maxxy Santiago, Consultant of ABS CBN in the Middle East and The Arab Times, Mr. Ben Garcia of Kuwait Times and Philippine Panorama, Ricky Laxa of The Times and GMA 7 Philippines, The Viking Club, Presenters of the seminar and workout. Seventy five participants attended the event exceeding the number expected.

“We are very impressed with the lecture prepared by PANIK for such informative and educational presentation and our exciting Zumba trainers who took the floor and got everyone sweated. Due to demands by other instructors who were not able to attend the event, FITPRO will organize another seminar and will be paired by Core Training to be handled by Sam Malit and her team from C Club” commented Galicia.

Machris Delfin and Bullet Manliclic, hosts of the event announced the forthcoming all Filipino body building competition to be staged in October, which will be under the patronage of the Embassy of the Philippines. A certification program of First Aid is currently on pipeline for instructors of FITPRO and twinning certification programs in US between ACSM, ACE. ISSA and AFFAA are under negotiations.
