Indian national believed to have made suicide bid minutes before landing in Hyderabad

An Indian national on-board an Emirates flight to Hyderabad this weekend was found with his throat and wrists slit in the aircraft’s restroom in a suspected case of suicide.

The incident happened inside flight EK526 from Dubai to Hyderabad on April 4, a spokesperson from Emirates airline said.

“A passenger was found bleeding heavily in the restroom just before descent by cabin crew. Crew administered all the necessary treatment on-board,” a statement from the airline said.

The passenger, identified as M.I. by The New Indian Express quoting police, was believed to have slit his own throat and wrists with a sharp blade just before landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

The 30-year-old passenger was met by medical crew and taken to a nearby hospital upon landing.

His condition was said to be critical, according to the Express report on Saturday. No information on his latest condition was available at the time of going to press.

Because of the incident, the aircraft was not utilised for the carriage of passengers from Hyderabad to Dubai and was flown back to Dubai for maintenance. A replacement aircraft was sent to Hyderabad to service passengers flying to Dubai.

“As the matter is now under investigation, Emirates cannot comment further on the incident,” the spokesperson said.
