The Environment Public Authority (EPA) cited a number of violations in several factories in the Al-Shuaiba industrial area. Five factories were cited for not following environmental guidelines, said EPA chairman and director Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad Al-Humoud Al-Sabah, in remarks to KUNA, noting that legal action would be taken against these factories.
Since the start of the year, up to 29 environmental violations have been cited and turned over to the public prosecution's office for legal action, he said.
He affirmed that strict instructions were given to the five factories today to avoid environmental contamination by following proper rules for safe operation of their factories.
On his part, acting director of the department of monitoring industrial locations at the EPA, Dr. Mishall Al-Ibrahim, told KUNA that the EPA would continue issuing citations in its systematic tours of industrial locations. He stressed that factories breaking environmental laws would be dealt with in accordance with punitive laws ranging from imprisonment to fines to possibly capital punishment depending on the enormity of the offense.
