EPA, Kuwait University sign MoU on protecting environment

Environment Public Authority (EPA) signed on Monday a memorandum of understanding with Kuwait University to coordinate and unify efforts between the two sides in the scientific and technical fields and reduce duplication in addressing various environmental issues.

Director-General of the EPA Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the signing of the memorandum that the memo aims at boosting cooperation between the two parties and coordinate environmental efforts.

He added the memorandum includes the formation of a joint committee that includes faculty members, researchers and experts from both sides to determine the priorities of issues and ways to address them concerning the implementation of plans and programs related to the environment.

He added that the committee is working on plans and mechanisms of action in emergency situations and emerging environmental issues as well as facilitating ways of communication between the two parties. He pointed out that the memorandum contains items related to scientific research, environmental studies and proposed research projects to protect the environment and assess the environmental impact and sustainable development.

He pointed out that the memorandum also provides for the exchange of information, the formation of an accurate and complete environmental database to contribute as much as possible in solving the problems facing the Kuwaiti environment.

It also calls on the two sides to cooperate in the development of monitoring and early warning systems through the exchange of experiences and technologies. Sheikh Abdullah said that the university in turn will provide the training of national cadres and scientific consulting to raise their efficiency in conducting laboratory analysis and integration in the use of laboratories of both parties, indicating that the memo focuses on the exchange of technological information that is environmentally friendly.

For his part, Kuwait University Director, Dr. Hussein Al-Ansari told KUNA that the university's collaboration today with the EPA is very important, recalling their cooperation at the Marine Science Center of the College of Sciences previously.

He added that maintaining the environmental situation of the country is a shared responsibility and benefiting from the experience and exchange of information in various fields is something very important, pointing out that this memo will develop the work environment at the University of Kuwait and the application of laws and regulations issued by the State in this regard.
