Dubai Airshow has been closed due to flooding and averse storm conditions which hit the UAE last night, with organisers advising visitors not to travel to the site at Dubai World Central.

“Dubai Airshow is closed for now, we advise people to refrain from travelling to the site. Further information to follow shortly,” event organisers F&E Aerospace said in a statement this morning.

A source reported seeing flooding at the exhibition hall and users on social network site Twitter have posted pictures of storm conditions at the site, as visitors queued up to gain access outside the venue.

Dubai was struck by heavy rains and thunder storms last night, forcing US military to move 12 US aircraft on display at the Dubai Airshow site to a nearby maintenance facility, a spokesman for US Air Force Central Command told Reuters.

Major David Faggard said US officials decided to move the aircraft away from the static display at the air show given forecasts of 45-knot winds and severe thunderstorms.

Air show organisers said precautions were being taken to secure the display area, but they were unaware of plans by other aircraft owners to move their aircraft.

"It is our understanding that the US Department of Defence aircraft are due to be moved to the maintenance area at the Dubai Airshow as a precaution to any adverse weather over night and will be re-positioned on the static display tomorrow," the airshow's organiser, F&E Aerospace, said in a statement on Wednesday night.

The US military brought a wide array of aircraft to the show, including two helicopters, a stealthy Lockheed Martin Corp F-22, four V-22 tiltrotor aircraft built by Boeing Co and Bell Helicopter, a unit of Textron Inc, a Boeing F-15E fighter and a B-1 bomber.

The airshow, moved to Dubai World Central this year, attracted 1,046 exhibitors, 163 aircraft on static display and a record-breaking $200bn order book.
