DIY lip stain
October 19, 2015, 1:09 pm

Whether your complexion is looking a little dull on Monday morning or you are trying to upgrade your look for a spontaneous night out, nothing brightens up the face like a little lip color. But some women are not always in the mood to slather on something super-glossy or go ultra-matte.

A lip stain looks more effortless and lasts a lot longer than other choices, but the best part is you likely don't have to buy anything new to get the look. Here are four easy, DIY lip stain recipes using items you probably already have on hand.

Lipliner: With one product and one step, this is the simplest way to create a makeshift lip stain on the go. Just grab your favorite dark-red or berry lipliner, and use it to fill in your lips completely.

Lipliners are extremely pigmented and long-lasting — plus, the finer tip makes for a more precise application than lipstick. You don’t have to shell out a lot of money for one, either. Just choose a product that is smooth and rich in color, and you are good to go. You can even afford to keep several different colors with you at all times.

Just be sure to exfoliate your lips really well beforehand with anything from a wet washcloth to a sugar lip scrub. Since this technique can be super-drying, you may want to add a touch of lip balm to keep your lips hydrated. Stay away from emphasizing any flakes or dry lines.

Vaseline and eyeshadow: If you don’t think your lips can handle the drying properties of a lipliner — or if you just want something a little more sheer — consider using Vaseline to get your ideal lip stain. Mix a dab or two of petroleum jelly with any highly pigmented product, like a dark lipstick or blush.  You can even use eyeshadow — just be sure to take a quick look at the ingredients before putting it on your lips.  Eye makeup can include colorants that are FDA-approved but may not be as safe to use on the lips, such as ultramarines, ferric ferrocyanide, and chromium oxides.

The Vaseline will make blending the color into your lips super-easy, and make it last for hours. Add more Vaseline for a sheer wash of color, or add more product for a darker stain. If you don’t have any Vaseline on hand, you could also use a waxy lip balm. Just avoid any lip balm that has a very slippery consistency, or else the color will slide right off.

Lipstick: This is an old trick for turning lipstick into a lip stain. You will need lipstick, translucent powder, a lip brush, and a tissue. Apply your shade of choice, and then place a thin tissue over your lips. Take your brush and apply the powder to your lips on top of the tissue. Remove the tissue and your lipstick will appear matte and last all day, like a stain.
