Bulgarian embassy celebrates Cultural National Day
May 26, 2018, 2:53 pm

To commemorate May 24 as the Day of Slavonic Alphabet, Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture, the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU opened an exhibition titled ‘Colourful Bulgaria’ at the embassy premises that showcased 33 photographs depicting the natural, traditional and cultural beauty as well symbolic sights of beautiful Bulgaria.

24 May is a National Holiday considered the day of literature, enlightenment and culture. It is a holiday of spiritual rising, pursuit of perfection and striving towards scientific and cultural achievements. This day has been celebrated for 162 years now by Bulgarians in the country and around the world, paying tribute to Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius, the creators of the Cyrillic alphabet.

The letters created by Cyril and Methodius, their translations of the liturgical books, their fight to protect the rights of all nations to do honour to God in their own languages have a historical significance to the national development and prosperity of Bulgaria. The enthusiastic celebration of the Day of the Saint Brothers by all Bulgarian people is a positive proof of the country’s thirst for enlightenment and science, for national self-determination and economic and cultural advancement.

Nowadays, Cyrillic alphabet is used not only by the Bulgarian people, but also by about 200 million people around the globe.
