Bhavans hosts CBSE cluster table tennis tournament

The 18th CBSE cluster table tennis tournament for the girls was hosted by Indian Educational School Kuwait on 14 and 15 May. 18 teams representing seven Indian Schools took part in this event under four categories: Under 11, under 14, under 17 and under 19.

Girls escorted by their physical education teachers received a rousing welcome from the Bhavans staff and students on 14 May.  The team meeting was held under the leadership of the Bhavans Physical Education Director Mr. Murugaiyan who briefed the coaches and the managers of the team about the rules and the regulations governing the tournament.

The principal of Bhavans, Mr. T. Premkumar who is a table tennis player himself addressed the students and the staff from the visiting schools. In his address, he emphasized on the importance of such meets involving the Indian school children and urged the kids to play and enjoy every game irrespective of the outcome. He thanked the children and their coaches for coming to IES for the event and wished them success.

This was followed by the inauguration of the tournament by Mr. T. Premkumar, when he had on the other side of the table Rachna from FAIPS serve to him. Mr. Premkumar demonstrated his skill and agility much to the surprise of all around the table.

On day one 21 matches were played. On day two, the matches started as usual with all the semifinals being lined for the day. Girls fought hard to establish their supremacy and the cluster winners under the four categories are:

Under 11, Indian Public School Kuwait, Under 14, Fahaheel Al Watanieh Private School, Under 17 Fahaheel Al Watanieh Private School and Under 19 Indian Community School Kuwait.

For the closing ceremony, a special guest, Sr. Serena Lobo, the principal, Carmel School.   Deepa Antony, a member of the Bhavan’s Physical Education Department presented the chief guest a bouquet and convivially greeted her.

Mr. Premkumar welcomed the gathering and in his address he congratulated the students for playing table tennis in all fairness and team spirit. He spoke high about Sr. Serena and lauded her performance as the convener of the Kuwait chapter and her contribution to the principals’ fraternity. She led the team through a prayer and blessed the children, the staff and the school. Sr. Serena gave away the trophies to all the winners and medals for the runners-up. It was followed by photo sessions of all the teams with their coaches.

Sr. Serena addressed the participants, the volunteers, and the coaches. In her address, she thanked Mr. Premkumar for inviting her. She also congratulated all the participants for taking part in the tournament. Mr. Premkumar presented Sr. Serena a memento for gracing the occasion.

The two-day event was wrapped up with the vote of thanks from Mr. Murugaiyan, the Physical Education Director of Bhavan.  He thanked everyone for their support and cooperation and the crowd erupted in applause when he ended his speech as a warm gesture of sportsman spirit and togetherness.
