Bhavan’s Kuwait hosts the grand finale of Bhavan’s GCC spell bee

The third edition of the Bhavan’s GCC spell bee grand finale was hosted on 6 February, in the IES Bhavans auditorium.

The Grand Finale which consisted of more than 3000 contestants from UAE, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait, witnessed a packed audience comprising parents and teachers. 13 schools in the Middle East were represented by the ace spellers in the GCC Spell Bee Competition.

Incorporating the cutting-edge technology, the competition was held simultaneously at the Modern Indian School, Oman, the Bahrain Indian School, Bahrain, the Private International English School along with Al-Saad Indian School at the PIES School auditorium, Abu Dhabi and the Indian Educational School, Kuwait through online video conference. 

The finalists were carefully selected through a three layered selection process; school level, national level, and knockout round, having to spell more than 300 words. The contestants from classes 1-12 in 5 categories competed in all modes to secure their positions in the Grand Finale.

The program began with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by the rendition of a prayer song in Sanskrit by Sunilkumar Menon, HoD, Sanskrit.  The ceremonious lamp was then conjointly lit by the chief guest. Sujatha Sivakrishnan, Principal, United Indian School, T. Premkumar, Principal, IES, Suresh V Balakrishnan, coordinator, Bhavans GCC Spell Bee, Lalitha Premkumar, Vice Principal, KG and primary wings, IES, and Rathi Raveendran, Principal, Jack and Jill Nursery School, Mangaf.

The Grand Finale consisted of three rounds namely the dictation round, the magic board and the rapid fire. Mr. Balakirshnan and Mrs. Jaemi Byju (the HoD, English, IES) were the pronouncers for the day.

The rapid fire round concluded the contest, followed by a solo classical dance performance.

The champions of each category were awarded INR 50,000, a trophy and a certificate. The first runners up and the second runners up of each category were given INR 10,000 and INR 5,000 respectively apart from trophies and certificates. All participants were accorded merit certificates and all finalists, mementos and certificates with the Bhavan’s policy ‘Every contestant is a winner’. The Spell Bee Coordinators of various schools in Kuwait were also presented with mementos as tokens of appreciation for their wholehearted support and cooperation.

Sujatha Sivakrishnan, the Chief Guest of the day addressed the gathering, congratulating the contestants on their remarkable sense of spelling. She also congratulated the organizers for conducting the contest in the most spectacular fashion.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Jyoti Fathima, the coordinator, GCC Spell Bee Kuwait Chapter.

The emcees of the day were Shifa Nanda of grade 10 and Mokhinoor B Tinchlikova of grade 9.

The results of the competition are as follows.

Category 1

Champion: Rahul Wavare, SIMS, Kuwait

First Runner Up: Shri Suryanarayanan, BIS, Bahrain.

Second Runner Up: Swarit Arora, MISO, Oman.

Category 2

Champion: Fawaz Ahmed, PIES, Abu Dhabi.

First Runner Up: Aaradhya Somani, MISO, Oman.

Second Runner Up: Bryan Biju, BIS, Bahrain.

Category 3

Champion: Abhay Lejith, PIES, Abu Dhabi.

First Runner Up: Kaivan Mitesh, MISO, Oman.

Second Runner Up: Rhea Pinto, IES, Kuwait.

Category 4

Champion: Harshit Kamal Chand, PIES, Abu Dhabi.

First Runner Up: Madhushree Prakash, MISO, Oman.

Second Runner Up: Shad Ahmed, IES, Kuwait.

Category 5

Champion: Shelvin Aleena John, IES, Kuwait.

First Runner Up: Sumaiya Asif Syed, IES, Kuwait.

Second Runner Up: Fathima Hanif, IIS, Kuwait.
