A group of 20 students from The British School of Kuwait (BSK) travelled to Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, 18 January to compete in the U13 BSME Sports competition hosted by British School Al Khubairat. On arriving at the accommodation at the New York University Abu Dhabi, the students were excited for an amazing weekend of sports using the state of the art facilities available on campus.
The event began with an opening ceremony where all students walked a lap of the athletics stadium, led by team captains Alhussaini AlQabandi (boys) and Victoria Morris (girls) who shared the responsibility of flag bearers for BSK. Following this, both sets of students went their separate ways with boys competing in volleyball and girls competing in football.
Day 2 was a busy day for everyone, kicking off with an early start for the boys in their football competitions and similarly for the girls in their netball competition. At the end of both competitions, Mr. Scott, Miss Natasha and Miss Jennifer had nothing but praise for their players, as they clearly gave their best on the pitch/court. Onto the evening activities were those students involved in the 4x200m relay and individual 1500m run had to use hidden reserves of extra energy in order to complete their events. Running under the floodlights inside the huge athletics stadium must have been an unforgettable experience for those on the track.
As the competition drew to a close on the final day, all that remained was to finish off the athletics activities. Renee Sarmiento powered home to take gold in the girls' 800m event - a truly amazing achievement. To close the event, all students dressed into their smart clothes and attended the formal gala dinner to receive their participation medals and plaque from the host school.
With the approach of BSK’s annual Sports Day in February, this weekend has set the students up for more records to be broken.
