The British Academy of Sport (BAS) organized the largest ever International Sports Tournament between the various Embassies in Kuwait over two days with ladies on Friday, 10 March and men on Saturday, 11 March.

BAS and the Serbian Embassy were joint patrons for the 2nd International Women’s Tournament, ‘Olympia Cup’, with 7 teams representing Egypt, Kuwait, Palestine, Philippines, Romania, Tunisia and USA. From the opening game, a high level of skill and expertise were on display as the ladies teams fought competitively to get through to the final. Host nation Kuwait joined newcomers Philippines, and after 3 nail-biting sets, it was the Philippines who held the Olympia Cup 2017 aloft to the delight of their colorful and jubilant supporters.

BAS Founder, Madame Vera Al Mutawa MBE, the Serbian Ambassador to Kuwait H.E. Vladimir Kohut, Balsam Al Alyoub, Kuwait's renowned fencer and sports activist, and the Director of BAS Lucian Anisia presented the awards on stage and the Olympia Cup to the winners.

On Saturday, the second day of the Tournament, BAS and the Romanian Embassy sponsored the 4th International Men’s Tournament, ‘Independence Cup’, with 12 countries including Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Kirghizstan, Palestine, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia and Zimbabwe opening the event with a highly colorful parade, which included national dress, mascots, flags and enthusiastic supporters.

It was an amazing day with very strong teams and great matches. The semifinals were played between newcomers India and Kirghizstan and Kuwait against Iran. After winning 4 very challenging matches, it was the host nation Kuwait who won the Independence Cup 2017.

The tournament was attended by many of the Ambassadors of the participating countries and also a huge number of community supporters of the various countries, who proudly wore their patriotism for everyone to see.
