Amir accepts Cabinet resignation
October 30, 2017, 3:29 pm

The Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad on Monday accepted the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah. An Amiri order, effective as of Monday, stipulates “the acceptance of the resignation, whereby the premier and ministers will proceed amid urgent circumstances as a caretaker cabinet, pending the formation of a new cabinet,” Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) reported.

The parliament will be informed about the resignation that will also be published in the official Gazette, the official news agency said. The Amiri Order states that it was taken after revision of the National Constitution, the Amiri Order issued on 30 November, 2016, naming Sheikh Jaber as Prime Minister, the decree on the formation of the cabinet and its amending decrees, as well as the resignation letter. The resignation was expected amid reports that several lawmakers were preparing to grill ministers over what they perceived as irregularities.

Tension also built up after the two sides failed to reach full agreement on several issues, including the reinstatement of revoked citizenships. The current 50-seat parliament was elected in November and several members, considered among the opposition, ran on platforms claiming they would be strict in dealing with the government.
