Al-Ghanim, Al-Khurainej win Speaker, Deputy Speaker posts in Parliament
The National Assembly on Tuesday named Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim its Speaker and Mubarak Al-Khurainej the Deputy Speaker.
Al-Ghanim won the Speaker post of the Parliament's 14th legislative term with the majority votes of 36 ahead of his rivals MPs Ali Al-Rashed, Roudhan Al-Roudhan and Ali Al-Omair who received 18, eight and zero votes respectively.
The first session of the 14th legislative term witnessed the election of the Parliament Speaker post between MPs Al-Roudhan, Al-Rashed, Al-Ghanim and Al-Omair according to articles 92 of the constitution and article 28 of the rules of procedures, which both state that the "National Assembly elects at its first sitting and for the duration of its term, a President and a Deputy President from amongst its members." Born in 1986, Speaker Al-Ghanim earned a BA in mechanical engineering and won the National Assembly elections in 2006, 2008, 2009 and the dissolved Parliament of February, 2013.
Meanwhile, MP Mubarak Al-Khurainej won the Deputy Speaker post of the Parliament's 14th legislative term with the majority votes of 36 against 25 votes of his rival MP Kamel Al-Awadhi in the first round.
Al-Khurainej received 30 votes, Al-Awadhi 18 while Khalaf Dumaitheer received 15 votes during the first round of the Deputy Speaker post elections.
