17 people killed in massive floods in India

At least 17 people died and hundreds of thousands displaced in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and North Eastern state of Assam following floods caused by incessant monsoon rains, local media reports said.

Madhya Pradesh was the worst hit as it reported 15 flood-related deaths while two people were killed in Assam floods. Authorities anticipate more rain related casualties in the coming days as many states including Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala are receiving increasingly heavy and incessant rains resulting in the overflow of some rivers and the disruption of various civilian services.

Indian Meteorological Department warned of heavy downpour in various states including Odisha, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in the coming days and advised the people to take necessary precautions to avoid loss of lives and property.
